The protective sleeve works better where the rope contacts the rock.

Pay to kill your kids at Carderock.
"Professional Guides" rigged this dead tree to belay a group of young girls. Luckily today wasn't the day it fell over. The log in the foreground was another dead tree that fell over with a family of Russians anchored to it. Nobody was injured, good news or bad, take your pick.

Yard sale, when you lay out everything you own.
A loop of old 1" webbing, assorted carabiners, runners and cordalettes, and some tiny pieces that won't hold in this rock.

Some of that internet gear is not a good idea.
That's a quick link, it's OK for sport anchors, not having four strands of rope in it. Why? Because it doesn't have a gate. If that collar loosens, all bets are off. This is 9MM canyoneering rope, it is not static, the climber better have his feet more than six feet off the ground to avoid decking out. This is the kind of stuff you see when people search the web or just shopping sites. You can buy mystery carabiners and ropes but it won't end well.

Friction and prayer.
The two trees are about 3 inches in diameter. Note the single carabiner with the gate facing down so it could open.
It was supposed to be a tensionless anchor, note the absence of any knot.
