No, this is never OK.

The AMGA may tell you a knot to secure the tail isn't needed on a figure 8, nobody will tell it isn't needed on a bowline.

  1. So what is wrong with the knot pictured? I cannot verify from this angle whether the knot is a correct bowline, but it does look like a bowline with stopper knot, albeit a poorly dressed one.

    1. Maybe, but the stopper knot is the only part of that knot which is unambiguously visible to my eye.

  2. That knot will never come untied under load. There is a whole bowline-is-death school out there; it is bunk. It can slip while not loaded, so check it before you weight it.
