Can you explain the motivation behind attaching the ties to the tree? Are they being used as part of an anchor somehow? It looks like a non-trivial effort was required for this.
They're not there as part of an anchor, that's part of the trail that's been slowly eroding for the last season or so, the author may have done it himself to make a point and to keep them from floating away when the water is higher .
