Slings and biners of outrageous anchors.

The tree in the air, slung about 6 feet up, oh and by the way, 2 ropes on the same tree doesn't mean 2 anchors. Note the guy being taught to hang over the edge to rig a top rope. Good to know, but people are doing it way too often.

They knew this rock wasn't big enough, so they added the tony tree.

To prevent recurrence, one guy moved the rock.

The laundry line of everything they had.

  1. I have been following your blog for sometime, for amusement and for tips on not what to do. Thank you for posting. I am not familiar with the area, but it appears to be a popular place for novice climbers, and also presents a challenge for many anchor builders. I climb established routes in the southeast at various places, some popular, and some less. There are almost always anchor bolts for the many toprope routes. I guess, I am surprised some one here has not raised a little money and started a bolting project. Why is that? Just curious.

    1. Carderock is part of the C&O National Historical Park. Bolts work well in the rock and the climbing community has offered to fund and install them. NPS can't make a decision, we've been through this a couple of times over the years.

    1. God knows it is hard to elevate the level of discourse in online comments. We could probably mine the Bard forever for quips about human foibles.
